WLCF Member Spotlight Interview
What brought you to crossfit and to WLCF? Did you have specific goals or something you were seeking to change?
My wife Bridget was interested. I was not, I was a Gold’s Gym guy doing the same workout I’d done since high school. I stopped by WLCF to inquire, did a short WOD, and it floored me. I came for 3 months and got injured (away from the gym). Right then, Bridget started. She loved it. She had friends there, she never missed she made tremendous progress. I was missing out! I wanted something that both she and I could share together. It was a great decision.
What keeps you coming back?
It makes me feel good, knowing I did it, and the physical feeling gives me a huge boost as well. “Job well done” satisfaction. My day doesn’t feel like a real day without that hour in the gym. And the community at WLCF is outstanding. We’re all friends. I feel like we show up to see each other as much as to work out.
What changes have you seen in yourself (physically, mentally, as a person, etc)?
I’ve been a member for 8 years. But just recently did I make some serious changes to my habits outside of the gym. I stopped drinking alcohol in September. That one change was so positive, I decided to go on a diet. It’s been two months and I’m down 35 lbs. I’m turning 50 in 3 months. I can’t remember feeling any better in all three aspects. Here’s my ‘before picture’ in August, 3 weeks progress, and 9 weeks. (I’m still going btw)
What’s been the biggest challenge that you’ve faced? How did you overcome it (or how are you working on it)?
Balance of ego and being smart. I’m not great at endurance. I come in last a lot. So I overcome this with getting the most out of it. Don’t cheat, substitute movements if you need to, do strict complete movements, and get more out of the WOD than a fast time. Get what it’s intended for, ya’ know? Don’t cheat yourself, there’s only one WOD that day.
What’s one thing you’ve learned through your time at WLCF? This could be about health and fitness, about yourself, or about how to approach life in general.
It’s never too late. You can change your body, health, and life. It’s all there waiting for you.
How do you stay active outside of the gym? How has your training here connected to that?
I wish I could say that I golf a lot, but I don’t anymore. Activities outside the gym are kids & family things. Practices and games. Enjoying it while it lasts.
What goals (big or small) are you working towards now? Have the types of goals you set for yourself changed since you started crossfit?
I want to stay in this lane. Traffic is all around, and I’m in a great lane right now. Goal is to stay in it.
What’s your favorite time of day to be in the gym and why?
I’m a “nooner”. But it is fun to knock out a WOD in the morning to start your day. I’d say I prefer that, but noon class is so much fun. It’s very social, people don’t have to hurry out to head to work once the hour is up.
What physical activity, sport or adventure have you always wanted to try? Why?
Snowboarding. Those boots look so much more comfortable.
If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice before you started crossfit, what would it be?
Focus on what you put into your body. Garbage in, garbage out.
Always show up. You’ll be glad you did.
