I had a member ask me this evening…“How do you know if your progressing”? The question came in passing, thus I didn’t have the chance to answer it. Nonetheless, it got me thinking…
So just how does one know if they are progressing? Here at WASC, we use our Wellness Pyramid Hierarchy. The pyramid represents the hierarchy of what we feel will lead to wellness; which is our goal for the people that walk through our doors. All these are building blocks on which we need to build sound habits and structure around…the bottom block being the most fundamental. The top being our ultimate metric we use to gauge our wellness pursuit. Here is our Wellness Pyramid Hierarchy…
Foundational Block is Rest and Nutrition
We all have heard just how important these things are… well I want to tell you that they are ESSENTIAL. If this block is not being nurtured and tended to, everything we build on top of this foundation will be unstable, short lived and in some cases; hazardous. We HAVE to flourish here…we have to!
From there, we place Gymnastics/ Range of Motion/ Mobility/ Movement block
Without the ability for functional movement, we will not be very useful and have the capacity to live without help. Well, this will require we have the capacity to use our body to its full capacity. All limbs and joints have a range of motion they are intended to cover, if we start to lose this, we lessen our ability to…MOVE. It’s fairly easy to see just how important this block is. If your having a hard time doing so…look up the word decrepit.
Once were eating and resting adequately, we start to improve our Aerobic and Anaerobic Energy Systems.
In short, we learn how to get adequate energy in short, moderate and long distances.
Then we introduce Weight Lifting.
Having the capacity to not only move ourselves, but to also move external objects allows us to broaden our usefulness. It also allows us to improve our strength in an artificial environment like the gym.
The top of the pyramid is LIFE.
This is our ultimate measuring tool. If our life is not improving, we have to start back at our foundational block and work back up the pyramid to see where we are slacking. We should have move energy, feel more useful, have less stress, and be growing in confidence I believe it matters very little as to what numbers you put up in the gym if this last/ top block doesn’t improve.
So there you have it…this how we know if we are seeing progress.
